Higher education

Zhejiang has 36 full-time institutions of higher learning where there are 212,000 undergraduates and 9895 postgraduates and over 100 key branches of learning at national and provincial levels. It boasts 39 post-doctoral mobile stations. Zhejiang University that has merged Hangzhou University , Zhejiang Medical University and Zhejiang Agricultural University becomes one of the largest universities in China . In the 10th Five-Year Plan, it is expected that university towns will be built in Xiasha, Binjiang and Xiaohe Hills of Hangzhou , Ningbo and Wenzhou .

Vocational education

Zhejiang has attached great importance to vocational education, with focus on polytechnic education. It boasts 506 vocational senior high schools with 88,000 students and 37 ordinary secondary specialized schools with about 444,000 students

Tourism Resources

Zhejiang is known for its rich tourism resources, ranking first in terms of quality and number of scenic spots. Throughout the province there are 11 national-level scenic areas and places of historical interests, 28 cultural relics under national-level protection, 2 national-state museums, 1 national-level holiday resort, 12 national-level forest parks and four natural reserves under national-level protection. It boasts about 600 star-rated hotels for international tourists and 45 international travel agencies. 2000 witnessed 1,126,000 overseas tourists and 58,700,000 domestic tourists in the province, making a total income of 43 billion yuan RMB.

Tours around Buddhist water country in eastern Zhejiang . Eastern Zhejiang is typical of water country landscape in China , boasting such places of scenic beauty and historic interests as Xikou of Fenghua, Hemudu Cultural Relics. Tourists may also explore temples and visit statues of Buddha in Putuo Mountains and Keyan of Shaoxing.

Tours around western Zhejiang . The western part of Zhejiang is well known for two rivers and one lake, namely, Fuchun River , Xin'an River and One-Thousand-Islet Lake . Marketplace Resources

Zhejiang enjoys the reputation of "A Province of Markets." Based on urban and rural markets, it has set up specialized wholesale markets of various sizes that have close relations with each other and with those outside Zhejiang . These markets are distinct for their complete range of trading products, high specialization and large business scale. At present there are 4348 markets of various sizes, including 451 each making an annual trade volume exceeding 0.1 billion RMB, 68 each making an annual trade volume of over 1 billion RMB and 4 each with an annual trade volume of 10 billion RMB. The yearly transaction volume from urban and rural commodity markets comes to 402.3 billion RMB. The past years also witnessed a growing market for such elements of production as finance, real estate, technology and information, which becomes a superiority for Zhejiang 's opening to the outside world and its economic development.

Ocean Resources

Zhejiang province is located in China's southeast coastal areas, has abundant rainfall and many river networks, there are 8 river systems, Qiantang river, Shao stream, Caoe river, Yong river, Jiao river, Ou river, Feiyun river and Ao river etc., total amount of water resources is up to 93.7 billion cubic meters, occupies 4th place in the whole country according to water resources amount that is calculated by unit area. Owing to the affection of geographic location and climate, in space-time distribution, the water resources of Zhejiang province present following characteristics:

1. Regional distribution of rainfall and river runoff is nonuniform, high value rainfall regions are mainly in maintain areas, low value regions are mainly in Hangzhou-Jiaxing-Huzhou, Xiaoshan-Shaoxing-Ningbo plain and Zhoushan islandsetc.,

this shows a decreasing trend from southwest toward northeast, the trend is exactly opposite from the distribution of population density and economic development;

2. Year distribution of rainfall and river runoff is concentrated, owing to the affection of season wind climate, most rainfall is concentrated from May to September, and rainfall changes greatly year by year, the differences have great disparity, the ratio between minimum value and maximum value of river flow is of 1:4 or so;

3. The source of river is short and the current is swift, large amount of runoff in river flow into the sea by flood form;

4. There are many mountain streams and brooks, their drop is large, hydroelectric resource is abundant, theoretic reserves of hydroelectric resource of the whole province are up to 8 million kWh. According to the statistic, until year-end of 1998, nearly 3700 reservoirs of over small (II) type were set up in the whole province, more than 7000 km of dike and seawall were rebuilt and reinforced, nearly 3000 floodgates were set up, 1.4 million kW of electromechanical drainage and irrigation motive power were newly added, total amount of developed and utilized water resources is up to more than 20 billion cubic meters, nearly 3 million kWh of hydroelectric resource were developed and utilized, strong basic guarantee was provided for Zhejiang economic and social development.
