Harbors

The construction of the Dalian harbor started in 1899, and is now the third largest in China , and the largest export harbor of the country. There are 65 berths especially for crude oil, oil products, coal, steel, timber, grain, containers and general cargo. Among them, 35 are berths for ships above 10,000 dead weight tons. The annual handling capacity of the Dalian harbor is over 80 million dead weight tons and it has established shipping relationship with over 150 countries and territories worldwide. The Dayaowan Bay Harbor now under construction is going to be the largest deep water international transit port with 100 deep water berths to be built for a designed handling capability of 80 million tons. Now in the first phase of construction, 4 container berths and 2 generally purposed berths are already in use, and the remaining berths are under construction.

Airport

The Dalian International Airport at Zhoushuizi in the northwestern part of the city can accommodate large aircraft such as Being 747. Forty-nine air routes have been established connecting Dalian in the air with 47 cities in China and around the world.

Railway

Railway from Dalian joins the rail network of Northeast China and North China . The Changchun-Dalian railway line is the main trunk in the railway system of the region. It branches out to the east and west coasts along Lushun , Jinzhuang, Nangan, Tianwu, and Bailao Lines, connecting themselves with marine transportation. The total length of these railway lines is 1,383.7 km, and the Dalian part of the Changchun-Dalian line is 162 km, with 43 stations for freight and passenger transportation. The Dalian Jinzhou central marshalling yard which is now under construction will further improve the capacity of Dalian 's railway transportation. The electrification of the railway line from Dalian to Harbin currently being planned will usher in a new era of bullet trains and fast main tracks.

Road

The total length of roads and highways in Dalian is now 4,091 km, of which 4,089 km are above grade 4, crossing 1,710 bridges. The highway density is 32.5km/200Km2.137km throughout Dalian region. There are 62 public bus lines operating in the city, with a total length of 625.3km.. On average, 18.8 standard buses are available for every 10.000 people, and the daily passenger flow volume is 2.973 million.

Post & Telecommunications

Dalian 's international postal and telecommunication services (international correspondence, telephones, and telegraphs) reach over 190 countries and regions. Over 50 kinds of services, including mobile communications, wireless paging, panel exchanging, DDN, CHINANET, voice information, express delivery, etc. are provided. Program-controlled telephones, transmitting information digitally are available in all the urban and rural areas. By the year 2000, the number of installed program-controlled telephones will reach of 1.5 million.

Power Supply

Dalian now has five power plants installed whose generating capacity exceeds 50,000 kW, with totally twelve generating units. The total installed capacity is 1.05 million kW. There are 172 power transmission lines of over 35 KV capacities, extending 2,692.8 kilometer. The number of transformer substations with a capacity of over 35 KV in the entire area has amounted to 128. The second phase of the Dalian Huaneng Power Plant, which has two sets of 350,000 kW coal-burning gas turbine generating units, has been integrated into supply network and generated power.

Water Supply

The fresh water resource in the entire Dalian region totals 4.94 billion cubic meters per year, of which 3.61 billion cubic meters is surface water and 1.33 billion cubic meters is groundwater. The biggest river the Biliuhe River is the source for the cross-region water diversion project. There are at the moment 10 reservoirs in Dalian supplying water, with a total reserve volume of one billion cubic meters. There are nine water purifying plants, 51 high-positioned water supply towers, and 3,343 km long water pipelines. Everywhere in Dalian has access to tap water supply.

Gas Supply

There are two gas production plants in Dalian , with a combined daily production capacity of 660,000 cubic meters. The total length of gas pipeline is 1,627 Km. Liquefied gas supply capacity to the city is totaling 21,000 ton/year. Cooking gas was supplied to 94.7% of the households by the end of 1998.

Heat Supply

The central heating is now available in 42.56 million square meters, which means that 88.19% of urban residents now have central heating. Throughout the city there are 32 large boilers of seven megawatt or over, which together supply central heating to 15.42 million square meters of urban areas. The Xianghai Heat and Power Plant and the Taishan Heat and Power Plant are now under construction, and they are expected to be put into use in the year 2000.

Accommodation Facilities

There are more than 30 hotels at different star levels in Dalian , including Furama Hotel, Regent Hotel, International Hotel, Holiday Inn, Dalian Guesthouse, Shangri-La hotel, Swiss Hotel etc . Residential quarters for expatriates such as the Taoyuan Villa in the old urban district and the Seaside Park Villa in the Development Zone are new facilities to make the life and work of expatriates in Dalian more convenient.
