Power supply

Electricity and coal are the two major energy sources in Jiangsu Province . By the end of 1998, the total installed capacity of those power plants whose installed capacity are equal to or larger than 500 kilowatts in Jiangsu Province has reached 16,070,000 kilowatts and there are 13 large power stations each with an installed capacity of more than 400,000 kilowatts. Jiangsu has a electricity transmission network comprising 1181 kilometres of 500,000 volt supper-hi-tension electricity transmission lines, 6948 kilometres of 220,000 volt and 9291 kilometres of 110,000 volt electricity transmission lines. Owing to the advanced electricity co-ordination and communication facilities, the province was the first to achieve automated electricity co-ordination at province, city, and county level in Dec. 1997. Each village was supplied with electricity in this province in 1996, and the electricity supply rate for all farmers in the province reached 99.99%.

Telecommunication

Jiangsu has completed the large capacity, multi-path, safe and reliable and far-reaching telecommunications transmission base network, mainly by optical cable but complemented by digital microwave and satellites. Its cities have witnessed a drastic increase in their numbers of fixed telephone lines, whereas all villages are connected with fixed telephone lines. Jiangsu leads the country in constructing the provincial information port and all its counties have built information ports. The mobile phones can reach all cities and counties in the province.

By the end of 2000, the overall capacity of Jiangsu ¡¯s fixed telephone switchboards reached 17 million lines; the fixed telephone users reached 11.3 million; the mobile phone subscribers reached 6 million; every 100 people had 28 telephones; the internet subscribers reached 2 million.

Aviation

There are eight airports in Jiangsu Province at present, namely Nanjing , Suzhou , Wuxi , Lianyungang , Nantong , Xuzhou , changzhou and Yancheng airports that link all major cities in the country. The airport of Nanjing is one of the major airports in china with 650 flights every week flying to 55 major domestic cities and Hong Kong , Macao , and foreign cities as Weniberg in Canada , Bankok in Thailand and Nagoya in Japan . Airports in Changzhou , Nantong , Lianyuangang and Xuzhou can lead to 44 domestic cities. The intentional flights can reach American, Europe and African through the aviation network. Their principal airplanes are 737, B757, MD82 and A320.

Railway

Centring in Nanjing and Xuzhou , there are three trunk railways in Jiangsu at present: the Jing-Hu Line (from Beijing to Shanghai ), the Ning-Wu Line (from Nanjing to Wuhu ), and the Longhai Line (from Lianyungang to Lanzhou ) with a total railway length of 748 kilometres. The Jing-Hu line connects Jiangsu with North China , Northeast China northwards and reaches shanghai and Zhejiang eastwards. Through the Longhai Line, connections from Jiangsu can be made to Central China , Northwest China and further to Europe , and the Ning-Wu Line can radiate to different parts of south China . A rail transportation system linking Jiangsu with all parts of china is therefore established.

Before 2010, Jiangsu will complete its construction of the high-speed railway specially for passengers between Nanjing and Shanghai , the railways from Xinyi of Jiangsu to Changxin of Zhejiang and will start the construction of the railway from Nanjing to Qidong and from Nanjing to Xi¡¯an . After completion of these railways, Jiangsu will build up a railway network connecting different parts in all directions with in the province.

Highway

By the end of 2000, Jiangsu had a total road length of 95,000 km: 1,088 km of expressways, 2,400 km of Class¢ñhighways and 10,000 km of Class¢òhighways. The structure and service of the road net work have improved. With the completion of key projects like Shanghai-Nanjing Expressway, Nanjing Airport Expressway, Jiangyin Yangtze River Highway Bridge and South Ring Road of Yangzhou , Jiangsu ¡¯s ¡°2 Vertical and 2 Horizontal¡± road structure has taken shape and the ¡°inter-linking and smooth transport¡± project of the expressway has begun functioning. The highway pivotal project and construction of passenger and cargo transport stations have started and the passenger and cargo transport will become more rapid and convenient.
