As a city of immigrants, Shenzhen, with its good development opportunities,
effective human resources incentive mechanism, and better living
conditions, attracts a large number of talented people from other
parts of China and of the world. In the past 20 years, Shenzhen
has absorbed about 600,000 professionals and technical workers.
The general quality of its population is rising all the time. In
this new city of immigrants, the average age is below 30 years old,
so people here are more innovative, more ready to accept new ideas
and concepts, and more vigorous.
Shenzhen has three institutions of higher learning, and is building
its own university city which covers an area of 100,000 square kilometers
and mainly offers graduate education. Various famous universities
including Qinghua University, Beijing University, and Harbin Institute
of Technology have already set up graduate department in the University
City. The annual enrollment of graduate students will be 7,000.
Shenzhen has also set up a virtual campus jointly with 33key universities
in China. Each of these universities will have representatives stationed
in the virtual university to engage in research work and graduate
education.
Every year, about 30,000-50,000 undergraduates, graduate students
and PhDs descend on Shenzhen from prestigious all over the country.
Many holders of intermediate and senior professional titles also
choose to come to work in Shenzhen. They are joined by returning
overseas Chinese students and professionals. Shenzhen boasts of
the largest talents market in China, with the annual number of participants
well over 1.5 million.
Shenzhen's social security system is complete and developed. It
has so far set up unemployment aid, retirement pension, industrial
accident insurance, and medical insurance. A complete social welfare
system is in place. This in turn facilitates the flow of talents.
