Energy and Transport
Ningxia is rich in coal, with 4 large coal mines annually producing
18 million tons of coal, besides meeting the desire of the region,
it has been sold to other provinces and other 10 countries including
west Europe and Japan. The power industry in Ningxia has developed
very fast. By the ed of 2000, there had existed 5 large of medium
sized power stations with the installed capacity of 2.23 million
kw (not including those self-owned ones), and the average generating
amount per capita ranks the 2nd in the country.
The synthetic transport system has been formed with railway lines,
highway, air transport and pipelines, therefore the transport is
rather convenient. The Baotou-Lanzhou railway liner runs across
the north and middle areas, and the Baoji-Zhongwei electrified railway
runs through the middle and the south mountainous areas and connected
the 2 railway arteries of Ling-Bao and Longhai. The first regional
railway line of Dagu has been put into operation, thus the operational
railway line totals 769 km in the autonomous region. By the end
of 2000, the total length of the highway open to traffic in the
whole region had reached over 10,000 km. For Yinchuan being the
center, the highway net has been formed based on the 12state and
provincial highways and the road leading to every corner in the
region with the density of road comes up to 15.25 km out of 100
km. There is 83 km of free express and 1,027 km of the first grade.
1,026 permanent bridges have been built, among which 6 are over
the Yellow River, which makes the biggest density of the bridges
over the Yellow River of a province in the country. And the civil
modernized Yinchuan Hedong airport, at the level of 4D, can be used
to land or take off various kinds of large of medium sized planes,
and the air lines open from Yinchuan to Beijing, Shanghai , Guangzhou,
Nanjing, Xi¨an, Chengdu, Kunming, Urumuqi, Wuhuan and so on. And
the aviation net leading to North China, Southeast and Southwest
has been set up , and more civil or international airlines will
be opened gradually in order to make Ningxia increase exchanges
with out world.
Post and Telecommunications
Ningxia has setup the postal and telecommunication networks with
fiber transmission as a main means, and digital microwave and satellite
transmitting ways etc. as a supplementary means. Its fixed telephone
network, mobile telecommunication network, digital data and multi-medium
communication have been covering the whole China and many countries
and regions in the world. In Ningxia, it has been realized that
every village can make direct phone calls and telephone communication
in every village and town has been program-controlled. Domestic
and foreign express mails can be delivered to Yinchuan, the capital
of Ningxia, and other main cities of Ningxia.
