Brief Introduction of Jiangxi

1. A survey of Natural Situation

Jiangxi province: called "Gan" in brief, is one of the inland provinces of the People's Republic of China .

1) Location

Jiangxi Province lids in the southeast of China and on the southern bank of the middle Yangtze River at latitude between 24o29'14"and 30o04'40"and longitude between113o34'36"and 118 o28'58".Jiangxi borders Zhejiang and Fujian to the east, Guangdong to the south, Hunan to the west and Hubei and Anhui to the north.

2) Area

The province has a total area of 166,900 Square Kilometers. With the shape of a leaf on the map, the province stretches 620 kilometers from south to north and 490 kilometers from east to west.

3) Climate

Near to the Tropic of Cancer, Jiangxi has distinct seasons. The climate in spring is changeable with wet rainy days when spring turns into summer. It is hot and dry in summer, but it is cold and dank in winter with a short frost period. The annual average sunshine is 1473 to 2077 hours. The province enjoys plentiful rainfall with a mean annual precipitation of 1341.4 to 1934.4 millimeters. The total reaches about 267 billion cubic meters.

4) Topography

In terms of topography the province is characteristic of mountains and hills. Mountainous areas take up 36% of the total land, hills 42% and plains and water field 22%. The chief mountain ranges are along the border areas, Mt. Huaiyu in the northeast embracing the largest copper reserves of the province. In the east stands Mt. Wuyi . "Home of tungsten" is the nickname for famous Dagengling and Mt. Jiulian in the south. In the west stands Mt. luoxiao . Mt. Mufu and Mt. Jiuling lie in the northwest.

5) Mineral Resources

Jiangxi is unusually rich in mineral resources. Among the 150 minerals discovered in the World, Jiangxi has more than 140 of this total, among them 89 kinds of mineral deposits have been veriried,33 are among top five in volume and quality in the country. The minerals in Jiangxi are characteristic of various kinds and highly complete sets. Of these minerals, the reserves of nonferrous metals, precious metals, rare metals and rare-earth minerals occupy a dominant position in the country. Jiangxi has set up the largest copper mine in Asia and the largest copper-smelting base in the country.

6) Forest Resources

Forest covers as much as 59.7%.The are 290 million cubic meters of timber and 1.3 billion pieces of bamboo in reserve in Jiangxi, both leading in the country.

7) Water Resources

There are more than 2400 rivers of various sizes running across the province. Of these, 160 have water all year. The rivers have a combined total length of about 18400 kilometers. The five major waterways in the province are the Ganjiang River , Fuhe River , Xinjiang River , Xiuhe River and Raohe River . The poyang Lake in northern Jiangxi ranks first among China ' slargest fresh water lakes, The water resources in Jiangxi total 141.6 billion cubic meters. The amounts in terms of both personal average and per mu of cultivated land are higher than the average national level. Ample water resources create a favorable condition for industrial and agricultural development of the province.

9)Tourism: Jiangxi owns exotic mountain, beautiful rivers, and places of interest scatter all over the province. Major tourist sites include: Mt. Lushan , Mt. Jingang , Mt.Longhu, Mt. Sanqing . Jingdezhen , Nanchang and and Ganzhou, among which Mt. lushan has been listed as "world Culture Scene" in "world Culture Heritage" by UNESCO.

9) Population

By the end of 2000, Jiangxi has a population of 41.6447 million.

10) Administrative system

The province is divided into 11 municipalities. They are Nanchang , Jiujiang, Ganzhou, Yichun, Shangrao, Ji'an, Fuzhou , Jingdezhen , Pingxiang Xinyu and Yintan. Nanchang is the provincial capital.

2.Investment Environmetn


Economy


In 2000,the provincial gross domestic product reached RMB 200.307 billion yuan, up by 8% over the previous year. The primary, secondary and tertiary industry increased by 6.8%, 6.7% and 10.4% respectively compared with the previous year. Pubic ownership economy developed rapidly. The fiscal revenue went up continuously. The fiscal revenue increased by 10.8% to RMB 17.2 billion yuan, among which RMB11.155 billion yuan is from local revenue, up by 6.1% over 1999.


1) Agriculture

Jiangxi is an agriculture-oreinted province. Its main agricultural output is among the top ten of China . In 2000, the agricultural gross output value reached RMB 76 billion yuan, Grain output totaled 16.146 million tons.


2) Industry

Various industry systems such as automobile, machinery building, electronics, chemical engineering, metallurgy, construction material, food, textile and medicine have been set up. Some of the dominant industries and enterprises developed rapidly and became the backbone of Jiangxi 's economy, In 2000, the provincial gross industrial increment reached RMB 53.978 billion yuan, up by 6.1% over the previous year.

In 2000, the output value of independent accounting industrieal enterprises in the province was RMB105.459 billion yuan, up by 9.1% over the previous year, and that of state-owned holding enterprises was RMB 74.151 billion yuan, up by 7.6%, and that of non state-owned holding enterprises was RMB 31.308 billion yuan, up by 12.2%. Among the non state-owned holding enterprises, the output value of the enterprises invested by the investors from foreign countries, Hong Kong , Macao and Taiwan was RMB 10.025 billion yuan. Heavy Industry, with an increase of 10.6% to RMB 67.571 billion yuan, developed faster than the light industry, which increased by 6.8% to RMB 37.888 billion yuan.

3) Fixed Assets Investment

The gross fixed assets investment reached RMB 54.8 billion yuan in 2000 with an increase of 11.5%. The basic industry and infrastructure were further enhanced with an improvement of the investment environment. The construction of major projects achieved remarkable success, accounting for 33% of the total investment in capital construction projects; the major 33 projects took RMB 5.728 billion yuan.

4) Domestic Trade

The sales of consumer goods kept growing smoothly with a pattern of buyer's market. In 2000.the gross value of retail was RMB 70.5 billion yuan, 8.4% higher than the previous year. Deducting price factor, the actual growth was 10.1%.The retail volume of consuming goods in urban increased 10.3% with a total of RMB 33.37 billion-yuan.

5) Foreign Trade and Economic cooperation

The assortments of exported commodities numbered 1193, classified into 58 varieties. They were exported to 153 countries and regions. Since the registration of the first foreign-owned enterprise in Jiangxi in 1984, the number of foreign-invested enterprises has reached 5217 with total investment of US$2697.58 million by the end of 2000.In 2000, the gross value of imports and exports,US$426.63 from imports. In 2000, $327.81 million of foreign investment was virtually utilized, 274 projects of utilizing foreign investment were newly approved with the contracted amount of foreign investment value reaching US$265.68 million.

The amount of contracts in foreign engineering projects, labour co-operation and designing consultation was US$95.03 million; the actual business volume reached US$109.49 million.

6) Finance and Insurance

At the end of 2000, deposits in financial organs across the province totaled RMB 196.68 billion yuan, which RMB17.827 billion more than 1999, up by 9.97%. Among the deposits, personal savings in ho both rural and urban households rose to RMB 124.32 billion yuan,RMB8.07 billion more than last year, up by 6.94%.The credits held by the banks totaled RMB173.99 billion yuan,RMB16.04 billion more than that at the of last year, up by 10.12%.

In 2000, the insured amount of insurance industry was RMB 2216.4 billion yuan, 1.77 times more than that in 1999.Insurance,up by 9.37%,reached RMB 2.816 billion yuan

7) Science, Technology and Education

Since the foundation of the People's Republic of China, Jiangxi has organized 16000 scientific and technological projects of various forms, with about 10000 achievements. Totally, Jiangxi has won 88 national scientific and technological prizes and has been granted 5256 patents from 11000 applications, In 2000, scientific and technological staff in state-owned enterprises added up to 69000.They had won 2 state-level scientific and technological improvement. Among the 1557 patent application, 1072 were granted patents. More scientific and technological activities were carried out. Institutions engaged in technical trade numbered 853 and the volume of business with the 5608 contracts was RMB 692.99 million yuan.

Education has made great progress. By the end of 2000, there were 32 universities and colleges, 18 adult institutions, 131 adult vocational schools. In 2000,966 postgraduate students were enrolled, leading the total number to 2118.Institutions for higher education enrolled 56892 new students with a total number being increased to 144293.Among them 24449 were graduates. Secondary-level education developed quickly. There were 160022 students in secondary vocational schools and 127129 students in senior secondary vocational schools. There were 2.2069 million students in junior high schools, 4.2268 million children (99.61% of school-age children)in primary schools. Adult education has also made remarkable progress, with 86000 students in adult study institutions and 15800 in secondary vocational schools.

8) Population and Environment

According to the statistics sample survey, the birth rate in 2000 was 15.55°, the death rate 6.07° and the natural growth rate 9.5°.

Environmental protection was further enhanced. 90 environmental monitoring stations were established.55natural protective zones, 20 scenic spots and 52 forest parks were set up throughout the province.646 anti-pollution projects were completed within the limited time. There were 93 smoke/dust control zones in 19 cities (including county-level cities), covering an area of 358 square kilometers.51 anti-noise pollution zones had been set up, covering 164 square kilometers.

9) Communication

There are total of 2241 kilometers railway and 200 railway stations within the province. The road construction has brought a brand-new look to the quality of roads. Among the total length of 37,318 kilometers, 30.48% are of the first and second classes. Almost all the county-level areas have asphalt roads and all the towns have roads. Jiangxi has a good inland waterway system, which totals more than 5537 kilometers. There are 712 berths and 56 ports with a total annual designed handing capacity of over 10000 tons. In 2000,the turnover volume of commodities was 74.79 billion ton kilometers, among which railway transportation increased by 10.1% and road transportation by 1.81%.The volume of carried passengers was 45.31 billion times kilometers, among which railway transportation increased by 18.4% and road transportation 3.86%.The 4D-level Changbei Airport in Nanchang forms the air transportation net with the airports 3.86%.The 4D-level Changbei Airport in Nanchang forms the air transportation net with the airports in Ganzhou, Jingdezhen, Jiujiang, and so on, hence accelerating Jiangxi's opening-up to the outside world.

10) Post and Telecommunication

The undertakings of post and telecommunication developed rapidly, offering more and more new business, By the end of 2000, the capacity of program-controlled switchboards reached 3.41 million terminals, in every 100 residents, there are 8.27 telephones available. The users of mobile phones reached 1400,287. Internet users increased to more than 269.472.The total output value in post and telecommunication reached RMB 8.13107 billion-yuan. Quality of service in post and telecommunication was improved remarkably.

11) Electric Power

Jiangxi is carrying out the principle of generating electricity with both thermal and hydraulic power. The major thermal power plants are the Guixi, Jiujiang, Jiujiang No.2, Fengcheng, Nanchang , Fenyi, Xinyu, Leping, Jingdezhen and Pingxiang electric power plants. The major hydroelectric power stations are the Wan'an, Zhalin, Jiangkou, Hongmen, Shangyoujiang and Luowan power stations.In2000, the total output of electricity was 20.231 billion kwh. The development of national economy and the demands of people in the province were guaranteed.

The province is planning to build a network of electric power projects along the Yangtze River and the Beijing-Kowloon Railway. The aim is to support the country's strategic development along the Yangtze River and take advantage of the opening of the Beijing-Kowloon Railway. The key Projects include the construction of the 4〜300,000 kilowatt Fengcheng Electric Power Plant, the 2〜300,000 kilowatt Mt. Jinggang Power Plant and the 180,000 Kilowatt Taihe Hydroelectric Power Station.

12) Nanchang National Hi and New-Tech Industrial Development Zone

Nanchang High and New-Tech Industrial Development Zone(hereinafter referred to as the zone)was founded in 1991 and approved by the State Council as state level high and new-tech industrial development zone in October 1992.The zone, only 3 kilometers from downtown with complete infrastructure, covers an area 19.5 Square Kilometers including a new 6.8 Square Kilometers area for concentrated development.

The perfect administrative organs and supporting service system provide foreign investors with fine quality and efficient service in roads, water, drainage, electricity and communication "Five clear, one even".

13) Nanchang Economic Technical Development Zone

The April, 2000, Nanchang Economic Technical Development Zone was approved by the State Council as a national economic technical development Zone .It is also a forging-oriented economic area that is constructed specifically in Nanchang City and Jiangxi province. The development Zone is located in Changbei District of Nanchang. Which is separated from the old Ganjiang Bridge ,The national highways of 105,320 and 316 are junction to the development zone. The expressways of Nanchang-Jiujiang and Nanchang-Zhangshu cross is .Within this zone, there are stations for both passengers and cargoes for Beijing-kowloon railway. It takes just 15 minutes by car from Changbei Airport to the zone. The projected industrial zone has an area of 9.8 square kilometers. "Five clear, one even" has been basically realized in the zone.
