The industrial production of Ningxia has been form with coal, power, metallurgy, machinery, chemistry, and papermaking, foodstuffs and so on as the principal part. There are now 91 large of medium sized enterprises producing more than 2,000 products of 40 broad headings. In 2000, the industrial incremental value reached 9.3 billion yuan RMB.

Ningxia has the predominant conditions for developing agriculture, with 1.3 million hectares of arable land and 0.23 hectare per capita, ranking 4th in the country. There are also more than 700,000 hectares of barren land waiting to be cultivated, which is one of the 8 provinces or regions having over 700,000bectares of barren waiting to be opened up, besides, there are 30,000 hectares of grassland suitable to be developed. Ningxia has good irrigation condition since the Yellow River flows through Ningxia with the total length of 397 km, and the water resource that Ningxia can use is 4 billion m3. And telephone has reached every village in the whole region, which is the first in West China. The total grain output in 2,000 reached 2.53 million tons. Moreover, the agricultural and its subsidiary local products in Ningxia have their own special features, for instance, the “Red treasure”-Chinese wolf- berry is world famous, and the domestic goat wool, sheepskin and other products are welcome among the traditional export goods.
