Harbin is one of the major industrial bases in China . The continuous constructions in the past 50 years here have made Harbin have a comprehensive and wide ranged industrial system with mechanical & electrical industries as its mainstay and light industry, textile, pharmaceutical, foodstuff, automobile, metallurgy, electronics, building materials, chemical industry, etc. as its main industries. Harbin has 35 out of 40 categories of industries stipulated by the State, and nearly 4,000 kinds of main products. Among them, the outputs and quality of the following products all take the lead in China , i.e. the complete sets of equipment for power plants, airplane, passenger wagons, precision meters and instruments, tools, measuring tools, relay protective equipment, aluminum magnesium alloys, etc. In 2001, Harbin reached RMB 110.10 billion yuan of industrial added value, an increase of total output value of industry 13.4% over the precious year.

The tertiary industry in Harbin has developed very quickly with fairly powerful commodities collecting distributing functions. With is over 60,000 commercial & materials companies and shops, over 10,000 service companies and units, Harbin has become a center of circulation for commodities and materials in the northem part of Northeast, China .
